Why Drink Matcha?

MYcha Organic Ceremonial Matcha Gren Tea Drinker

From energising me to helping me to stay in shape and keep healthy, here are three of the main reasons I choose to drink matcha tea everyday.

Matcha has less caffeine than coffee but gives me more energy, whilst keeping me calm and focused at the same time.

A one gram serving of matcha tea contains approximately 30 mg of caffeine, compared to the 70 - 75 mg of caffeine found in a regular cup of coffee. But the caffeine in matcha affects me very differently to the caffeine in coffee. I don't know about you, but coffee has a tendency to over stimulate me with a big (but short-lived) burst of energy. Leaving me flitting from task to task and spending a lot of time on unproductive things like checking emails, scrolling through Instagram and reading pointless news stories.

The caffeine in matcha is absorbed by the body at a much slower rate. This means I get a much steadier burst of energy with no spikes, crashes or jitters. It's also rich in L-Theanine, an amino acid that boosts alpha brain wave activity, helping my concentration and focus.

Already nearly calorie free when drunk the traditional way, matcha tea is great for helping me to keep in shape by tackling the issue of weight from both sides. It boosts metabolism and burns fat.

A study featured in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that matcha tea can increase thermogenesis (the body’s own rate of burning calories) from a normal 8%-10% of daily energy expenditure, to between 35% and 43% of daily energy expenditure.

The slow release of caffeine and sustained energy levels also mean that I don't feel the need to reach for those unhealthy snacks.

Matcha is the ultimate superfood. It boasts a wealth of health benefits, but is best known for being a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants are the body’s defence agents, they are chemical compounds that prevent ageing and chronic diseases. Matcha boasts 137x the amount of antioxidants and 3x the amount of catechins called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) – an antioxidant linked to fighting cancer, viruses and heart disease – than other kinds of standard green tea.

Here's how matcha compares to other superfoods.

So, I get a mega dose of antioxidants with every sip of matcha tea. All of which help to boost my immune system and stop me from getting ill so often.

But more importantly for me, when I start my day by sipping organic matcha, I'm not just choosing a drink with lots of health benefits. I'm setting the tone for a day of good choices.

  • Wow I didn’t realise there was such a bonus of antioxidants in Matcha! Really loving my morning latte (I make mine with almond and coconut milk) and I’m going to remember your point about starting the day as you mean to go on with good choices. Thanks Kelly-Anne
